Consular protection: the benefit nobody quotes

Visa-free counts dominate the marketing. In a genuine crisis, what matters is who answers the telephone.

An open passport on a desk

Mobility indices measure where a passport lets you go. They say nothing about what happens when you are somewhere that has become dangerous, and that is the scenario in which a second nationality earns its cost.

Consular capacity varies enormously. Some states maintain embassies in more than a hundred countries and have evacuated citizens from conflict zones within days. Others rely on reciprocal arrangements with partners and can offer little beyond a document replacement.

For families whose primary nationality carries geopolitical exposure, we weight consular reach heavily when advising on jurisdiction. A slightly weaker visa-free score attached to a state with genuine diplomatic infrastructure is often the better instrument.
